As an experienced ‘Caulker’ Frederick earned good money

On one fateful Saturday Frederick, for whatever reason, failed to hand over his earnings from his weeks diligent work in the Dockyard of Baltimore.

His furious master refused to let Frederick to go and seek and negotiate his own contracts within the ship building community, fearing it was a ruse that would result in an escape at some point.

Frederick in any case did so and settled into work at Mr. Baileys boatyard which is where this scene takes place.

The hammer that Frederick has in his right hand was built by ourselves after researching extensively the specialist caulking hammers that were used in the mid 19th century America.

Caulking was the method of taking soaked and spun flax strings and hammering them into the cracks of the thick wooden planks that made up the hulls of large wooden ships of that time, using a slim wedge shaped chisel. This ensured the hull remained waterproof.

The soundscape design of this scene was crafted to reflect the working environment he would have experienced.
