There is some upside to life with Mr. Covey. He got fed well compared to his time at St. Michaels.

The downside, discounting Mr. Coveys lack of tolerance and fierce methods of punishment, was that along with his fellow enslaved he works worked often to the point of exhaustion.

Frederick describes another ghastly aspect of life in the south where owners would hire men to impregnate an enslaved woman so as to produce progeny that he would then own going forward and have them work eventually upon their farm.

In this example Mr. Covey got very fortunate as the unfortunate Caroline produced twins.
