SCENE 2-1a : Life as an enslaved person
Frederick is back on the plantation where he was born in Maryland
In this scene we transport Frederick back to his early days as an enslaved young boy.
We have changed the aspect ratio to that of the ‘Hollywood’ format as well as switching to black & white to emphasis going back in time.
He describes most of the key facets of life for enslaved people on Colonel Lloyd's large plantation, the deprivations of clothing and living accommodation as well as the poor nourishment they received for their relentless toil on the plantation.
It is in this scene that Fredrick introduces us to the first of several Overseers that instils fear and dread into the his enslaved subjects. They were typically poorly educated white men, often unmarried, partial to alcohol and lacking in humanity.
They controlled the enslaved with the frequent use of a Cowhide whip, often for the slightest of misdemeanours.
